DIY Solar
Not As Hard As It Seems

Why DIY solar? There are a lot of reasons to do it yourself when it comes to solar power. Some people want to save money, instead of buying expensive ready made items. Others want the control that they can get only by doing their own work, and some just like to figure out how things work and put them together. No matter what your motivations are for working on DIY solar projects, it's not as hard as some people make it out to be. You do need a basic understanding of how solar systems work, and you'll need to plan out your project carefully. However, there's no reason you can't learn to create your own DIY solar systems and start collecting renewable power from the sun.

There are a number of different kinds of DIY solar systems you might want to create. All of them involve photovoltaic cells, and most will require some sort of battery. Among the different kinds of DIY solar systems that are commonly made are solar lighting, solar computers, solar chargers for other devices, solar hot water heaters, and solar ovens. Just how complex and expensive a given DIY solar project will be depends on what you need it to do.

Remember, before you get started on any DIY solar project, be sure you've done your research. The Internet and many libraries contain information and plans for solar projects you can make at home. With a little time and effort, you could soon be drawing power from the sun and using it to run small household systems, handheld devices, or even your computer. However, if you go too quickly, or don't plan well enough in advance, you could ruin the project. Since the components of some DIY solar projects are costly, care and caution are important.

Not all DIY solar projects are complicated, however. It's best if you start with something simple, like a solar oven, or a small solar charger. These can be built with minimal skills, and some projects, like the oven, don't even need photovoltaic cells! Once you've mastered the techniques required to build these smaller projects, you can move on to building your own solar water heater, or creating your own solar lighting.

Every DIY solar project is complex enough to deserve several of its own articles. Research more to find out how to build the solar devices that you're interested in. It might take a little searching and some knowhow, but anyone can learn to build DIY solar projects, and have them succeed!
